Can MuseScore Import PDF? Here's What You Need to Know

July 11, 2026

If you've downloaded sheet music as a PDF, you might assume you can simply open it in MuseScore and start editing. Unfortunately, it's not quite that simple.

Whether a PDF can be imported depends on the type of PDF you have. Understanding the difference can save you a lot of time and frustration.

Why PDFs Are Different

A PDF is designed to display sheet music exactly as it appears on the page.

Unlike notation files, a standard PDF doesn't contain editable musical information. It only stores the visual layout of the score, much like a photograph of sheet music.

Because of this, MuseScore can't directly edit most PDF files.

Can MuseScore Import a PDF?

MuseScore has limited support for importing PDFs.

If the PDF contains scanned or printed sheet music, you'll typically need music recognition software to convert it into an editable format first.

Once the notation has been recognized, it can usually be exported as a MusicXML file, which MuseScore can open and edit.

The quality of the conversion depends on how clear the original sheet music is. Clean, high-resolution PDFs generally produce better results than low-quality scans.

What Is MusicXML?

MusicXML is one of the most widely used file formats for exchanging sheet music between notation programs.

Unlike a PDF, it stores the actual musical information, including notes, rhythms, measures, dynamics, and other notation details.

Because of this, MusicXML is much better suited for editing than a PDF.

Importing MusicXML into MuseScore

Opening a MusicXML file in MuseScore is straightforward.

Once imported, you can:

  • Edit notes and rhythms
  • Change the key or tempo
  • Add dynamics and articulations
  • Rearrange the score
  • Export the finished version as PDF, MIDI, or another supported format

For musicians who regularly edit sheet music, MusicXML is usually the preferred format.
